Subject: The windows plot freeze when I try to do a simple plot
I have the following problem, I recently had installed Ubuntu 11.10 in my computer. Apparent scilab works perfectly, but when I tried to do a simple plot., The window plot freeze, and freeze all scilab. Even I can not close scilab, this is completely freezing. In ubuntu 10.10 i don have problem, but i wanna run scilab in ubuntu 11.10. I read that is possible that is problem of the version of c compiler, but I do not know how to fix it.

Hi,

What is your graphic card ?

Please be sure that you use "official" drivers for Nvidia and ATI cards

Me too... in Ubuntu 11.04 I didn't have this problem... now with just "plot" command scilab hangs up.

Subject: it works but...
After reading this page (http://wiki.scilab.org/Troubleshooting%20for%20Scilab%205.0%20beta), I've installed the package libgl1-mesa-swx11 (with synaptic). This package conflicts with libgl1-mesa-glx and unity 2d is launched when ubuntu starts...

It's not the ideal solution but now scilab 5.3.3 works fine on ubuntu 11.10 with my mobile intel 945gm card .

Subject: how was it solved
The proposed solution clashes with other mesa libs. So how is this solved? Did you guys just install the proposed package
ignoring the conflicts and Unity still worked fine for you?

Let us know how precisely how is it that this solved it for you.

cheers,

You are right!
We need a definitive solution on unity, no only in unity 2D.

Obviously there is a problem with libGL.so which version is new under Ubuntu 11.10.
Fortunately there is a simple way to use older version  of .so libraries without breaking your Linux configuration : it's the LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable.

Here's what works for me (under Ubuntu oneiric) :

1) _do not install_ libgl1-mesa-swx11 but download the package and extract libGL from it :

* open : http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/i386/libgl1-mesa-swx11/download and *save the .deb file* it e.g. under /tmp
$dpkg-deb -x /tmp/libgl1-mesa-swx11_7.11-0ubuntu3_i386.deb /tmp Now you have files 'libGL*.so' under something like /tmp/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/mesa/ 2) copy libGL*.so in a safe place - e.g. in ~/lib 3) launch scilab with LD_LIBRARY_PATH set - e.g. :$ (export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=~/lib ; scilab)

Et voilà, now you should have a running scilab able to plot as usual.

Greetings,

Robert

It works! Thanks!

I saved the library files here:
/home/rodmra/.Scilab/lib

And changed the script
/opt/scilab-5.3.3/bin/scilab

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/home/rodmra/.Scilab/lib"

and voilá!
works!

I've installed linux mint 12 kde 64-bit version and did it this again.

Step by step that worked for me:

c) Extracted from 'libgl1-mesa-swx11_7.11-0ubuntu3_amd64.deb' these two files 'libGL.so.1.5.071100' and 'libGL.so.1' and saved them in '/home/YOURUSERNAME/.Scilab/lib/' ;
d) Opened '/opt/scilab-5.4.0-alpha-1/bin/scilab' and added this line in the start of file:

I think that you are adding this export path a the start of the file (after execute the comand), not at the end!

Try and tell me.

Subject: A Dirty fix found
hi,
I am also using ubutnu 11.10.and I had the same problem

I fixed it by compiling and install  MesaLib-8.0.1

The steps I followed is
3)applied the above diff and removed patches that changes source code files from debina/patches
4)run "dpkg-buildpackages"
5)installed the the new deb packages

After this we can use "scilab plots" in gnome3 environment . without affecting gnome3's graphics.

Note:
1) Compiling Mesa will take long time
2) Simply compiling Mesa and replacing "lib*... .so"  s didn't worked . thats why I used dpkg-buildpackages (may be Some configuration problems)

My graphics card is intel 945 GMA

I hope this will be helpful
