Your teacher is usually your best place to start. Sometimes s/he can give you help outside of class time.

Another option within your school is your guidance counselor. S/he may know of senior students within the school who could help (maybe your school even has an official peer tutoring program) as well as individuals and tutoring centres in the community.

You can also check with friends, classmates, your local Yellow Pages, and online ads such as Kijiji.

When you talk to a potential tutor, some things you will want to ask:

What is your fee?

Do I have to commit to regular sessions, or can I request sessions on an as-needed basis? What is your cancellation policy?

What is your approach to tutoring?

Where do you hold tutoring sessions?

I'll elaborate a bit on those last two:

Some tutors (most often at a tutoring centre) have their own curriculum that they follow to boost your math skills. They must be successful with this -- there are a lot of them around and they're staying in business -- but it may not help you with what you are specifically facing in class TODAY (or this week or this month). Personally, I think a tutor should help you with what you are working on in class right now. If s/he identifies a pre-requisite topic on which you're weak, of course it makes sense to spend time on that, too!

Some tutors will come to your home; some work out of their own home; some work in an office; some will meet you in a public place, such as a library. If they work for a tutoring centre, they have probably had a police background check done, but don't assume, ask! Think about what you're comfortable with.

Wishing you success!

--Laura

I am aware of a few resources that may be useful:

Online Math Tutoring - Acellus provides online tutoring that uses videos combined with assessments. In comparison to hiring a tutor, this is a much less expensive option.

Credit Recovery Online - Ask your teacher if Acellus Credit Recovery is available at your school. The online program uses deficiency diagnostics to determine what areas you can improve in and provides instruction in the areas needed.

Good luck!

Josh
